THE ROWING SEASON
As well as the famous Historical Regatta that takes place on the first Sunday in September. Venice and its lagoon are the venue for over 120 regattas every year from April to October. Many of these competitions are organised on an extemporary basis; ten are promoted by the City of Venice together with the Racers' Association and coordinated by the Venetian Rowing Associations in order to preserve and popularise a sport whose origins spring from the very nature of the city and its surroundings. Many of these regattas coincide with traditional festivals and fairs during which, at one time, the competition was a chance to win the acclaim not only of the people but also of the city governors. Today the municipal authorities are committed to reviving this ancient custom as they are well aware of the wider, not just sporting, values ambodied by the regattas: this particular sport not only represents those ethical values shared by all sports but is also a vehicle of understanding and respect for the lagoon and the rediscovery of the city's sea culture. The regattas are recommended for the leisurely tourist who wishes to discover Venice's true roots in a unique atmoshere of events which the people of Venice follow with great passion and participation. _______________________________________ Regatta Sensa - 8th May 10.30 am.
